Rhinoplasty (Nose Job)

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose to improve its appearance, function, or both. It may be performed to address concerns such as a dorsal hump, nasal width, tip shape, asymmetry, nasal deviation, or changes resulting from injury. Rhinoplasty can also be performed to improve nasal breathing when structural problems contribute to airway obstruction.
Considerations
The nose is a complex three-dimensional structure made of bone, cartilage, skin, and soft tissue. Surgical planning is individualized based on the patient’s facial proportions, nasal anatomy, skin thickness, structural support, and functional concerns. The goal is not to create a single ideal nose, but to achieve a result that is balanced with the patient’s other facial features.
During consultation, the surgeon evaluates the nasal airway, septum, skin quality, nasal proportions, facial symmetry, and the relationship between the nose and surrounding facial structures. Patients should understand that swelling can persist for many months after surgery, particularly at the nasal tip, and the final result may take a year or longer to fully mature.

Procedure

Rhinoplasty may be performed using an open or closed approach. Depending on the desired changes, surgery may involve reshaping or repositioning the nasal bones and cartilage, correcting a deviated septum, refining the nasal tip, reducing or augmenting the nasal dorsum, or using cartilage grafts to strengthen and support the nose. Septoplasty and other functional procedures may be performed at the same time when necessary to improve nasal airflow.
Potential complications
Potential complications include bleeding, infection, persistent swelling, changes in sensation or smell, nasal obstruction, asymmetry, contour irregularities, scarring, septal perforation, and dissatisfaction with the appearance. Revision surgery may occasionally be required to address functional or aesthetic concerns
Goals
The goal of rhinoplasty is to create a natural, balanced and structurally stable nose that complements the face while preserving or improving nasal function.
