Liposuction is a surgical procedure used to remove localized deposits of excess fat and improve body contour. It is not a treatment for obesity or a substitute for weight loss. The best candidates are generally patients who are near a stable, healthy weight but have areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.

Considerations

Liposuction can also be used to improve contour after weight loss or in combination with other procedures such as abdominoplasty, breast surgery, or body contouring.Common treatment areas include the abdomen, waist and flanks, hips, thighs, arms, back, chest, chin and neck.

Procedure

During the procedure, small incisions are made and a thin cannula is used to remove fat through controlled suction. Techniques may include tumescent liposuction, power-assisted liposuction, ultrasound-assisted liposuction or other energy-assisted technologies, depending on the treatment area and individual patient factors. The amount and distribution of fat removed are carefully controlled to create smooth, proportional contours while minimizing irregularities.

Liposuction is particularly effective for improving body shape rather than body weight. It does not tighten significantly loose skin, and patients with substantial skin excess may require an additional procedure such as an abdominoplasty, thigh lift or arm lift. Maintaining a stable weight after surgery is important for preserving the result.

Potential complications

Potential complications include bleeding, infection, fluid collections (seroma), contour irregularities, asymmetry, changes in sensation, skin injury, scarring, blood clots and, rarely, serious complications related to fluid shifts, fat embolism or injury to internal structures. The risk of complications increases when large volumes or multiple areas are treated, making appropriate patient selection and surgical planning essential.

Goals

The goal of liposuction is to create smoother, more balanced and proportionate body contours, rather than simply removing as much fat as possible. A successful result depends on careful assessment of the patient’s anatomy, skin quality, fat distribution and overall body proportions.
