Brow Lift

Brow lift surgery (also called a forehead lift) is a cosmetic procedure designed to elevate the position of the eyebrows and smooth the forehead. It is commonly performed to address brow descent, forehead wrinkles and a tired or heavy appearance of the upper face, which often develop with aging due to changes in skin elasticity, soft tissue descent and muscle activity.
A brow lift is not intended to change facial expression, but rather to restore a more rested and balanced position of the brows and forehead while maintaining natural movement and individuality.

Indications for brow lift
As the brow descends with age, it can create a heavy or hooded appearance over the upper eyelids. In some cases, this may also contribute to visual obstruction or a constantly fatigued expression.
A brow lift may be considered for:
- Low or drooping eyebrows (brow ptosis)
- Deep horizontal forehead lines
- Frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines)
- Hooding of the upper eyelids caused by brow descent
- Asymmetry of the eyebrows
- A tired, angry or heavy facial expression
In some patients, brow position is evaluated in combination with the upper eyelids, as both regions contribute to overall upper facial appearance.
Types of brow lift techniques
There are several surgical approaches to brow lifting, and the choice depends on anatomy, degree of brow descent, hairline position and desired outcome.
Common techniques include:
- Endoscopic brow lift – A minimally invasive approach using small incisions within the hairline and a camera to elevate and reposition the brow tissues
- Coronal brow lift – An incision placed across the scalp behind the hairline, allowing broad repositioning of the forehead and brow
- Temporal (lateral) brow lift – Focuses on lifting the outer portion of the brow, often through smaller incisions at the temples
- Direct brow lift – Incisions placed just above the eyebrows, typically used in select cases where precise elevation is required
Each technique is selected to balance aesthetic goals, scar placement and degree of correction needed.
Brow lift and upper eyelid surgery
Brow position and eyelid appearance are closely related. In some patients, what appears to be excess upper eyelid skin is actually due to brow descent rather than true eyelid redundancy.
For this reason, a brow lift may be performed alone or in combination with upper blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) to achieve optimal upper facial rejuvenation.
What Can a Brow Lift Achieve?
A brow lift can:
- Elevate and reposition the eyebrows
- Open the upper eyelid area and reduce hooding
- Soften forehead and frown lines
- Improve symmetry of the brows
- Create a more alert and rested appearance
- Restore a more youthful upper facial contour
Goal
The goal is not to create an overly elevated or surprised appearance, but to achieve a natural brow position that complements the eyes and overall facial structure.
Preparing for surgery
Ideal candidates for brow lift surgery are individuals in good general health with realistic expectations about surgical outcomes. A detailed facial assessment is performed to evaluate brow position, eyelid excess, forehead anatomy and hairline characteristics.
Patients are advised to avoid smoking and nicotine use prior to surgery, as these can impair healing and increase the risk of complications. Certain medications and supplements may also need to be adjusted before surgery to reduce bleeding risk.
Recovery and risks
Recovery after brow lift surgery varies depending on the technique used. Swelling, bruising and temporary numbness of the forehead or scalp are common in the early healing period. Head elevation and activity modification are typically recommended during initial recovery.
Potential risks include bleeding, infection, scarring, asymmetry, changes in sensation, hairline changes, nerve injury and dissatisfaction with brow position. Most patients experience gradual improvement in swelling and refinement of results over several weeks to months.
Brow lift surgery is ultimately focused on rebalancing the upper face by restoring a more youthful and natural brow position while preserving expression and individuality.
